MixedBag portings

MixedBag portings were a way to profit by from our experience in console development and our many friendship with other italians game dev.

After the first game made by MixedBag, the team has started a new branch of jobs regarding the porting and publishing of game made by other italian teams.

This new branch of the company would take advantage of the know-how and the codebase that the team have written during the past years to increase the portfolio of games that the company owns.

In this kind of projects I made mainly the implementation of the codebase in this new projects, but also managing the submission process of these games on the console platforms.

The hardest part of this job was that many times I had to rewrite part of the original code to adapt the flow of the application to respect the policy of the game console. This require me to increase my flexibility but also my communication skill to better understand the needs of the original teams.

The first experiment of porting was Wheels of Aurelia a game made by SantaRagione and released on Sony Playstation 4 and Microsoft Xbox One in October 2016, and after 1 year also on Nintendo Switch.

Official description of the game:

Embark on an immersive road trip through the gritty western coast of Italy during the roaring 1970’s. Playing as Lella, a bold, spunky woman, experience the sights and sounds of a tumultuous time in Italy’s history while uncovering events from Lella’s storied past. Take the road less traveled, while meeting an unpredictable cast of dynamic characters along your journey and making detours along the way.

An interactive visual novel based on short moments in time during Lella’s travels, each playthrough ends with one of sixteen different endings based on your choices. Travel across the famous “Via Aurelia” and discover a new side of Italy in a thought-provoking game about the road trip, not the destination.

  • Uncover Lella’s fierce personality and mysterious past while choosing each line of her dialogue in the game
  • A compact game experience with sixteen different endings, each with its own epilogue
  • Simple and highly intuitive one-handed controls.
  • All original Italian soundtrack provides emotional ambience to accompany the game’s narrative
  • Original art by renowned illustrators, handcrafted to bring Italy to life in new and unexpected ways
  • Rooted in researched and culturally accurate events during the 1970’s including kidnappings and extreme political turmoil
  • Independent Games Festival Honorable Mention, IndieCade Nominee, Fantastic Arcade Game Spotlight

A new challenge has started when we decide to collaborate with Broken Arms games to port their game ATOMINE on Sony Playstation 4, Microsoft Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Here the job was hard because as well as port the game on 3 platforms, we had to reduce the complexity of this game to gain a better performance on Nintendo Switch.

Official description of the game:

ATOMINE is a twin stick procedural rogue-lite shooter set in a virtual world with minimalist design, where the player recounts on the screen the real events of STUXNET, the first weapon ever created in the form of computer virus.

Fast and Fun
Atomine is fast. There are a lot of enemies and you have to kill all of them to complete the levels. But don’t worry, you have infinite ammo and a (great) modular weapon system.

Weapon System
In Atomine the player can modify his weapon using special modules that can be find in the game. The modules have effect to specific parts of the weapons: type of bullet, number of bullets, rate of fire and other mutators.

Procedurally Generated
During a run, the system can detect the intrusion and modify the game, so player must act quickly!

Boss Battle
There are not only ‘small’ enemies. Atomine must also defeat big and powerful bosses.

During the Milan Games Week of 2017, MixedBag establish a new collaboration with the small italian publisher Adventure Productions to release on console two games The Wardrobe and Detective Gallo. Both the games are point and click adventure made by extra small italian teams.

The Wardrobe was the first game to be released on Sony Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch in July 2018, here we had to rewrite a lot of the low level code to adapt this game to console policy but we also add some features like the “back to main menu” button that were missing in the original game released on Steam.

Official description of the game:

The Wardrobe is a 2D point & click adventure game in which you play as Skinny, a teen-skeleton with an impertinent attitude and a sparkling wit, willing to do anything to save his best friend’s soul from eternal damnation!

  • A visually-rich 2D point & click adventure game which pays tribute to the pop culture through a myriad of references
  •  Inspired by the great ‘90s classics such as ‘Monkey Island’, ‘Day of the Tentacle’ and ‘Sam & Max: Hit the Road’, the game has a strong sense of humour and isn’t shy about dealing with mature and non-politically correct themes
  •  More than 40 hand-illustrated and digitally colored locations, populated with more than 70 characters
  • Four types of actions for each hotspot and dialogues with multiple choices (full of funny answers to try)!
  • Dozens of clever puzzles and many inventory objects to collect!

Detective Gallo was the second to be released on Sony Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch in August 2018, in this case the effort made by MixedBag was really big because the original game, released on Steam, was made in AGS so we had to convert the game in Unity3D rewriting it from scratch.

Official description of the game:

Detective Gallo is a point&click comic-noir adventure that is entirely hand-illustrated and hand-animated, and whose protagonist is a feathered and grumpy private eye struggling with a very tricky case, bizarre characters, and puzzles that will put his insight and patience to the test.

  • A non-violent adventure, inspired to the classical Disney cartoons and the best point&click adventure game of the past!
  • Play as Gallo, a… rooster noir detective, and investigate on a multiple plant murder!
  • Meet lots of incredible characters, all hand-animated, frame-by-frame
  • Dozens and dozens of logical puzzles and quests!
  • Listen to over 50 minutes of original pure jazz-noir soundtrack!
  • Fully dubbed in English and Italian, with multilanguage support!
